We are excited to welcome the Urban Wood Network to the Expo!
What is urban wood?
Any wood that was not harvested for its timber value and was diverted or removed from the waste-stream and developed or redeveloped into a product. Urban wood can come from 3 sources: deconstruction, fresh cut urban trees, and salvaged trees.
The Urban Wood Network's (UWN) mission is to support and promote the sustainable recovery, utilization, and marketing of urban wood, encouraging its use in the industry. The network connects individuals and organizations across the urban wood supply chain, from tree removal and milling to marketing and manufacturing, with the goal of reducing waste and creating value from urban trees that would otherwise be discarded.
The display will show the lifecycle of a tree and how one would take an urban tree when it comes to the end of its life and mill it into useable products. This interactive display will have educational materials, samples and finished wood products from various UWN members who have followed USRW chain of custody, showing what our trees can become if we keep them out of the waste-stream.
Did you know?
Every year in America, we typically chip, burn or landfill about 12.7 million metric tons of urban logs that could be processed into quality urban lumber and durable wood goods.
Just how much carbon is stored up in a tree? Come find out at the Expo!
